Welcome to the final debate of the exhibition “The Ballot – Piece of Paper or Tool of Power?”

The exhibition tracks the evolution of the ballot paper in the Nordic and Baltic region, from the first general elections until today. But what about the future of elections? Will the ballot paper look the same 30 years from now? For the closing event of the exhibition a group of distinguished speakers will lay out provocations that might challenge our expectations about the future of elections.

The speakers include Theodora Helimäki, an election scholar from Helsinki University, Jenni Karimäki, senior researcher at the Centre of Parliamentary Studies at the University of Turku and Therese Pearce Laanela, Head of Electoral Processes Team at International IDEA. Jiri Räsänen, the initiator of the “Leader of the Free World” project will reflect on the legacy of that initiative. Max Valentin from Stockholm-based democracy think-tank Fabel will join via live feed from Ukraine, reporting on recent democracy experiments. Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, a Helsinki-based artist, will look at a ballot from GDR and ask if we can learn anything from elections in East Germany.

Refreshments will be served!
