Warmly welcome to the launch of the TAKES publication, a collection of 13 texts for revisions in the ecosystem of creative labour, habits, and practices within the field of filmmaking.

 

TAKES includes text contributions by: Maryan Abdulkarim, Keshia Dsilva, Hilda Kahra, Geli Mademli, Hanan Mahbouba, Eduardo Makoszay Mayén, Tania Nathan, Glykeria Patramani, Tuuli Penttinen Lampisuo, Sotiris Petridis, Aga Pokrywka, Kaino Wennerstrand and Kari Yli-Annala.

TAKES was commissioned & edited by Kenno Filmi in 2020-2021.

Kenno Filmi is a co-operative film production house founded in 2019 by Danai Anagnostou, Elena Näsänen, Christopher L. Thomas, and Martta Tuomaala in Helsinki, Finland. Taking a research- centric approach, through film productions, critical publications, and creative programming, Kenno Filmi addresses and challenges the discriminative structures that are still present in the film industry. Prioritizing collaborative methodologies, a Kenno Filmi production fosters dreaming, artistic expression, the exchange of skills, time, and ideas.

Kenno Filmi studies practices, production and distribution of moving image works intersectionally related to queer, trans, feminist, decolonial, racial, disability and economic justice.

The publication is funded TAKES is funded by Frame Contemporary Art Finland, The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture – AVEK, Kenno Filmi, Museum of Impossible Forms, and Laboratory of the Urban Commons.

In collaboration with the 34th Helsinki International Film Festival Rakkautta & Anarkiaa and Kenno Filmi.

 

Panelists Bios:

Maryan Abdulkarim is a social speaker, writer, and activist interested in themes relating to freedom. She participates actively in public discussion as a political commentator and a columnist. She collaborates regularly with choreographer Sonya Lindfors and is a member of Miracle Workers Collective that represented Finland at the 58th Venice Biennale. Abdulkarim is also a  founding member of the Nordic Feminist Network, including policymakers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sami regions. Abdulkarim’s and Eeva Talvitie’s book, About ten myths on feminism was published in Finnish in 2018. Her second book will be published in collaboration with photographer Uwa Iduozee. She made her debut as a screenwriter in the short film Dream Job produced by Tutti Films. Abdulkarim received the Minna Canth prize in 2019, awarded annually to a person shaking the Finnish society. She is a member of the Obama Foundation Network.

 

Keshia Dsilva is a PhD candidate in Social Psychology at University of Helsinki. Her research, funded by Kone Foundation, explores how gender-based violence is represented in the advocacy campaigns of gender justice organizations in India. She is particularly interested in how power and ideology intersect in the visual imagery of gender justice advocacy.

Hanan Mahbouba (b. 1990 San Jose, CA) is a writer, producer and filmmaker. Her work focuses on storytelling that explores the space between belonging and otherness. Hanan’s interests, in both film and text, revolve around the distillation of the singular moments that end up framing our understandings of ourselves and others. Recently, she wrote and directed the short film Fatima Falling and is currently at work on her first feature. Hanan has an MFA from The Writer’s Foundry at St. Joseph’s College and has worked extensively in NYC as a producer and writer for documentary and independent film projects.

Tania Nathan is a writer, journalist, spoken word artist and educator who lives and works in the greater Helsinki region. Decolonizing through art and the homeland are both subjects close to her heart and she approaches her subject matter with wit, allegory and stylized prose. In her free time, she likes foraging for wild foods, olympic weightlifting and roaming the forest with her rescue dog, Lilli.

Aga Pokrywka is a multimedia wizardess. With an academic background in animated film and computer simulations, she works with video, graphic design and collaborative practices in order to build eclectic narratives. She is a graduate of the Polish School of Reportage (non-fiction writing) and ZeLIG School for Documentary in Italy (social documentary training). She is interested in re-telling stories and capturing diverse viewpoints through interactive and non-linear strategies. Since 2016, She’s been involved in the organisation of non-hierarchical venues and events in Helsinki, such as Temporary and Social Tools. She is also a co-founder at Super Eclectic, a Helsinki-based creative team that collaborates with socially-engaged initiatives to communicate their mission.

Kaino Wennerstrand is an artist and sound designer, working mainly with audio and text. They have written for AQNB, Meteli, Turun Sanomat, and a host of publications and platforms, including exhibition catalogs and academic publications. They’ve taught sound design and art in different art universities for over 10 years. Currently, they are focused on making radio features and sound-based works with their artist duo Biitsi.

Danai Anagnostou is a producer for Film, Media & Live Art based in Helsinki. She is currently the Curator for the Society of Cinema at the Museum of Impossible Forms. In 2020, she began her Doctoral Studies at Aalto University, School of Film, Television, and Scenography where she studies hybrid models for production, curation, and education in the field of filmmaking.
