Crisp autumn air, Danish coolness – and really great art! Who doesn’t long for a Danish art autumn? Here are some recommendations to some of the autumn’s most exciting art exhibitions in Denmark, presented to you by a Copenhagener in exile.

Value Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde

In the group exhibition of Value Art, works are presented which in different ways reflect over the value of the art – and not only for the individual, but the society and the market. The exhibition includes contemporary art by, among others, the Danish-Norwegian duo Elmgreen & Dragset, as well as the artist groups of A Kassen and Ingen Flygt. But also older works by Asger Jorn and Bertel Thorvalsen.

MICHAEL KVIUM: CIRKUS EUROPA, ARKEN – Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj

During this autumn at ARKEN his first complete installation will be shown, which includes paintings, film, sculptures and installations which convey a story about a contemprary Europe in transition.

Abramović Method for Treasures, The Black Diamond, Copenhagen

Marina Abramović is one of our time’s greatest performance artists. Her retrospective exhibition The Cleaner has caught the attention of many museumgoers to both Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Lousiana Museum of Modern art in Humlebæk, Denmark. The library The Black Diamond in Copenhagen now displays a whole new work of hers, created specifically for the library’s exhibition of treasures from their collection. By utilizing Kiekegaards letters, Saxos History of Denmark and Tycho Brahe’s observations as a starting point, Abramović has created a complete installation which involves, among other things, various rituals that visitors take part in, an audio system and specially designed human shelves.

The Sound and Video Works of Dodda Maggý, ARoS, Aarhus

The psychedelic patterns, meditative image sequences and musical sensitivity creates an almost hypnotizing vibe in the Icelandic composer and video artist Dodda Maggýs work. As part of the annual ARoS Focus // New Nordic-exhibitions 2017 her video art is shown at ARoS in Aarhus – which is well worth a visit.

23 September 2017 – 14 Januari 2018

Ingvar Cronhammar, HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Herning

Swedish-born Ingvar Cronhammars monumental sculptures can be seen in many place in Denmark, not only in various museums, but in public spaces as well. For quite a while he’s been living in Herning – and this autumn the HEART museum, which located in the same city, will be displaying his vast collection of works. Here one can experience 13 sculptures, or sculptural installations, which with Cronhammar’s use of sounds, lights and a shocking visual language conveys a nearly uneasy sense of grand power.
